One of life’s dreamers…

Today’s daily prompt:

The Tooth Fairy (or Easter Bunny, or Santa Claus . . .): a fun and harmless fiction, or a pointless justification for lying to children?

The tooth fairy is well remembered from my childhood, as is Santa Claus! I was eight when I asked whether he was real or not!! I still remember the conversation . As for the Easter Bunny, who needs it when Jesus is bigger than all of that?! Most of these things are a harmless part of childhood I guess, providing they’re not taken too seriously. I may no longer believe in these things but I am definitely one of life’s dreamers. It’s one of the reasons I love reading. I think if I ever had children I wouldn’t want to start these myths with them though. For me there are too many better stories, Over to you, what do you think?

We taught our three children the real meaning of Christmas and Easter, but alongside that we also had the fun of anticipating Father Christmas’ visit on Christmas Eve, and the Tooth Fairy leaving some money under their pillows (never bothered with the Easter bunny). I think it is all part of the excitement of being children and I don’t think any of my kids were traumatised when they gradually realised that neither of these characters actually existed. In the meantime, believing in them had given them a lot of fun and excitement! In fact, due to the kindness of some neighbours, Father Christmas used to arrive in our street on a fire engine a few days before Christmas to bring an early present to the children. Can you imagine how sad my kids would have been if we hadn’t let them join in with this incredibly exciting event? Childhood needs some magic, some fantasy and mystery in it. Time enough as an adult to be starkly aware of the realities of life.

Absolutely, that’s what I mean by being a dreamer. Same as your kids, knew lots of stories which put some magic in my childhood. Agree with you, would be poor childhood without it.
